Prescott police chief search down to eight

PRESCOTT – The Prescott Police Commission interviewed eight applicants for chief of police on November 7 and 8. Four candidates were interviewed each day. The new chief will succeed Chief of Police Mike R. Bondarenko, who will retire in February 2014.

The candidates are all veteran law enforcement officers in Wisconsin. Four are current chiefs of police and four are current members of the Police Department.

The interviews were conducted by the five-member commission, which is an independent body that will select the new chief. Nick Wasylik, who is the Commission’s consultant for the police chief succession process, and Chief Bondarenko were present during the interviews.

“The next step in the process if for me to conduct background investigations on the candidates,” said Wasylik, a retired Hastings, Minn., police chief with more than 30 years law enforcement experience. The background investigations are scheduled to be completed December 1.

The commissioners will meet again on December 3 to choose the finalists for the position, Wasylik said. The finalists will undergo a second round of interviews before the Commission and an interview with city department heads in early December.

The names of the finalists for chief of police will be disclosed to the public in advance of the second round of interviews, Wasylik said.

The Commission hopes to name a new police chief by Christmas.

Bondarenko, 61, will retire after seven-and-one-half years in Prescott. He took office in August 2006 after his retirement from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office where he served for 29 and one-half years. Bondarenko will retire with 37 and  one-half years of law enforcement service in Wisconsin
