Collin Gilles likes serving the public.

The Elmwood resident is its Ambulance Director, a captain on the Fire Department, and since 2003, a member of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Gilles has spent most of his Sheriff’s time in patrol until last week, when he started in Investigations, replacing Tom Gunderson.

“I guess it was the need to move forward in my career,” Gilles said, explaining the reasoning for the switch. “Being involved in bigger cases; working a case from a different angle.

“I’m looking forward to working large narcotic cases and multi-jurisdictional cases.”

He added he thought about applying when the previous Investigations opening came up which was filled by Aaron Hansen.

“I wasn’t ready before, now I am,” he said.

It doesn’t mean Gilles will miss being on the road, especially nights, where he worked most of the time.

“I enjoyed the high stress, high volume types of calls,” he said. “The night calls would not be a lot, but more substantial, more of a need.”

Gilles graduated from Elmwood High School in 2000 and went on to earn his degree in Law Enforcement from Chippewa Valley Technical College.

“Law enforcement is an exciting profession,” he said. “It’s been what I thought it would be. Being able to interact with people; helping people in numerous different ways.”

Gilles still calls Elmwood home with wife Nicole and their two kids, Halle, age 10 and Gavin, 18 months.

“Elmwood is a quiet, safe community for my kids to be in,” he said.
