Ellsworth School Board approves formation of facilities committee

A charge and structure for a new school district facilities committee were approved by the Ellsworth School Board Monday.

The research committee is being formed in conjunction with one of four district goals established earlier, according to Superintendent Barry Cain. The ad hoc group will eventually come to the board with recommendations about facility needs, he said, expecting the process to last up to a year to a year-and-a-half. Meetings could be held every three-to-four weeks at the outset and related speakers brought in for some of them.

"They're going to be concerned with what we need to do to move this district forward," he said, predicting a start date of around March 1.

Board Member Dan Kaler confirmed the possibility of having to contract with an architectural firm and/or an engineering firm as part of the process. Board Member Rick Kornmann emphasized the process will apply to the whole district.

Approximately 30 people will be on the committee, Cain said. The charge, as proposed by administration, states: "the ad hoc facilities committee will address the immediate facility needs of the district through gathering information about our current facilities, academic programs, extra-curricular programs, and community opinions and current educational trends. The committee will provide options to the school board regarding facility needs at a date to be determined."

As for the structure, the proposal states: "The committee shall consist of community volunteers, school board members, district administrators and staff members."
