Ellsworth School foundation elects board, officers

Since its beginning several years ago, the Ellsworth Community School District Foundation has approved many grants to help the students and faculty of the local school district by providing those extras not available in limited budgets.

The extras, totaling well over $30,000 so far, help enhance the educational opportunities and build a better community.

The foundation is run by a group of highly dedicated members who have made a financial commitment as well as contributing their time and talents as a volunteer on the board of directors.

Every year, the foundation meets to re-elect a board of directors who, in turn, elect officers to serve the coming year.

This year's annual meeting was a pot luck affair held at the American Legion Club in Ellsworth on Jan. 23.

Having welcomed Amanda and Jeremy Brenner, and Ryan Schnell, newest members of the board, President Sue Hinck proceeded to outline the many accomplishments of 2012. In addition to successful fundraising efforts of the Taste of Tuscany at Vino in the Valley in June, the foundation had a food booth at the Ellsworth Cheese Curd Festival and also helped fund several Excell Grants as well as Reading University.

Reading University has become the foundation's signature venture, providing summer reading classes for children in first and second grade to help them get a leg up before fall classes start. The idea came from publishers in Indiana and Canada, and was suggested by Milt Helmer.

"It helps assure children do not get behind in valuable reading skills and will help them all through life," he said.

In addition to grants, the foundation also manages the Schumaker family scholarship. This scholarship provides $20,000 to a student chosen by a special committee of the board of directors.

The foundation recognizes a teacher in the Ellsworth School District for outstanding achievement with the "Teacher of the Year" award. The 2012 recipient was Jack Radabaugh.
