Spring Valley's Science Sensations
Five Spring Valley High School science students departed from the Team Oil Travel Center in Spring Valley, Wisconsin, at 7:20 am Thursday via super stretch limo provided by River Valley Limo's owner Jeremy Fritz of River Falls, Nellessen Grain Farms and Team Oil Travel Center, arranged by Mel Jorgenson, and driven by Bryant Ekstrom, , to compete in the Superbowl of Science, the 'National Ocean Science Bowl'. The Spring Valley Pep Band, with director Donna Dawson, filled the Team Oil Travel Center with a proper school song send off.
Twenty-five regions of the United States will compete in Milwaukee, WI to test the knowledge of these students in regard to ocean, lake, and other water related sciences. Spring Valley's High School students have earned this position of representing Wisconsin, as well as the Midwest, through intensive, grueling competitions. These science enthusiasts are up against schools that have more students in one class than Spring Valley has in the whole school district. Normally the competition is held at an ocean related region, but this year it is held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because of this, private supporters of the Spring Valley National Ocean Science Bowl team decided that, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" would have to replace the cross-country trip the students would normally be rewarded to attend the competition. The students, coach, and support staff are taking a limo to the Train Station, and will fly Delta Airlines to come back home.
The five students and Coach Michele Huppert's train and plane tickets are paid for by the National Ocean Science Bowl organization, Eric (Michele's husband and support staff)'s tickets for the train and plane, are Eric's expense. Coach Michele, in a knee brace and crutches, is recovering from ACL replacement surgery, requiring Eric to be her aide.
