New Ellsworth Middle School principal kept his eyes on the prize

If Ellsworth school personnel have had a feeling someone was peering over their shoulders, it may have been Pete Nusbaum.

Nusbaum said Wednesday he was aware of the schools and community here before being hired as the new Ellsworth Middle School Principal, succeeding Paul Uhren. He’s not only had friends from Ellsworth, but has seen its school leaders in action.

“I’ve been watching Ellsworth for a while,” he said.

The veteran educator saw Ellsworth’s representatives to Cooperative Educational Services Agency (CESA) meetings “work as an administrative team” when he was also there, he said. Moreover, one of his top acquaintances, Steve Miller, son of the late local Police Chief Ron Miller, was the best man at his wedding and they coached together.

“I’ve been coming to Ellsworth since 1989,” he said.

Nusbaum’s sports background would also have made him aware of the school district where he’s now employed. He said his most recent sports involvement was at St. Croix Central Schools in Hammond, which competes in this area.

The new EMS Principal is a native of Waterville, Minn., population 1,700 when he grew up there, he said. It was a rural area surrounded by lakes—a lot of farming, so Ellsworth reminds him of his hometown.

The son of the late Shirley and John (they operated a meat market), he was in a family of eight, he said. Most of his siblings are still in the vicinity of his home community; one brother butchers in a different market within four-to-five miles of his parent’s former business place.
