Construction management will benefit district

By Roger Hulne

Prescott School Superintendent

PRESCOTT--The Prescott School District recently requested proposals from construction management firms to assist with the design and construction planning process for a proposed new high school.

This expert input is essential to developing a quality project respecting the desires of the community as we move forward in addressing our educational space needs.

A construction manager is retained early in the process to work closely with the architect as building designs are formalized. The construction manager represents the owner (in this case, the school district). Their job is to contain costs from the very beginning of the process. They also assure quality control in the development and construction of the project as it proceeds. The construction manager also makes sure we get a product reflecting the values our community for a solid, basic building without unnecessary add-ons.

The district received proposals from three companies. A fourth company declined to submit a proposal. A committee consisting of five community members, three school board members and two school staff members interviewed the interested firms on Aug. 15. Those companies were Bossardt Corporation of Minneapolis, Miron Construction of Wausau and Kraus-Anderson of Circle Pines, Minn. A fourth company, Market and Johnson of Eau Claire, declined to submit a proposal.

All three interested companies are highly recommended with extensive experience in this area. Along with the interviews, reference checks will be completed before a decision is made.

The next step in the planning and design process is to reconvene a facilities committee to work with the construction manager. Architectural firms, with the skills to provide a quality project at a reasonable cost, will then be interviewed.

The district is committed to providing as much information as possible as the process continues. Be sure to watch for opportunities for public input on this important project. We appreciate the input from those who attended listening sessions and we look forward to offering similar opportunities as the design progresses. Anyone interested in serving on the facilities committee should contact the district office at 715-262-5389.
