Schachtner defeats Jarchow in special election

Hinzman goes from student to principal at Elmwood

ELMWOOD -- Jon Hinzman has seen the Elmwood School District through the eyes of a student (1993 graduate) and a teacher (since 2001).

Starting next fall, Hinzman will add another level to his Elmwood experience, as he was approved last month by the school board as the elementary, middle and assistant high school principal.

Hinzman succeeds Adam Zenner, who was promoted to superintendent/high school principal upon Barry Rose's resignation to accept the Cumberland Superintendent position.

"From roaming the halls as a student to now being in charge of them, it's a weird feeling," the 32-year-old said.

His objective, though, as principal is clear.

"To provide students with the best education possible," he said.

After high school graduation, Hinzman attended St. Cloud State University (Minn.) on a basketball scholarship and earned a degree in special education in 1998. He stated he chose that field because he wanted to make sure students of all ages were able to get the same opportunities.

Hinzman wasn't ready to end his playing days after graduation, so he moved to New Zealand, where he played professional basketball for six months.

"I hated to give it up," Hinzman said of his playing career. "But, I was ready to move on to the next chapter of my life."
