Schachtner defeats Jarchow in special election

Committee: Ax the trees

What has been talked about for months, heck, even years, became official on May 14 during a Pierce County Building Committee meeting.

The two large oak trees, which have adorned the Pierce County Courthouse for generations will be coming down.

By a vote of 4-1, the committee, which has the authority to act without going to the full County Board, approved the request to remove the trees as soon as possible after two previous motions of trimming the trees and removing the trees "when appropriate" died due to a lack of second. Ron Bartels was the only one who opposed.

The motion which was approved, calling for saving much of the trunk, if possible. That will depend on the status upon removal.
