Letter from Rep. Petryk: Updated Wisconsin job numbers

Updated Wisconsin Job Numbers

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) recently released updated data on private sector job growth in our state. In the first quarter of 2013, Wisconsin added more than 24,000 jobs. During this time, our state’s wages also increased by 2.5 percent in the private sector.

The data collected by DWD shows that since 2011, the state has added at least 62,000 private sector jobs. In addition, our state’s unemployment rate has held steady at 6.8 percent which is below the national average of 7.4 percent. This is proof that we are moving our state in the right direction.

The following table contains the unemployment rates for our 93rd Assembly District including current data and rates from July, 2012.

As our fall session approaches, I know that my focus and the focus of the legislature will continue to be making Wisconsin a place people want to start new businesses and keep their established businesses. If you would like more information from the DWD, please visit their website at

Michael and Logan LaRock Honored by the Boy Scout Court of Honor

On Thursday, August 22, 2013, both Michael and Logan LaRock of Downsville were honored with a Medal of Merit from the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America for saving the life of their father Glen. The Medal of Merit is presented to Scouts who have performed an act of service of rare or exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others.  I was fortunate to be invited to their Boy Scout Court of Honor and it was my honor to present these young men with a Legislative Citation honoring them for their heroic actions.

On October 20, 2012, Michael and Logan were helping their father cut wood on their land. Glen suffered a tragic accident while operating the chainsaw he was using. Both Michael and Logan sprang into action and started first aid, which they learned in the Boy Scouts, on their father’s left arm. Michael removed his belt and placed it on his father’s arm as a tourniquet while Logan applied direct pressure to control the bleeding. Both Michael and Logan helped put their father in the car while their mother Jacqie transported him to the hospital.

Thanks to the quick, level-headed thinking of Michael and Logan, Glen made it to the hospital after losing 2 pints of blood. Their actions saved both Glen’s life and his arm.

It was my honor to have met these two incredible young men as well as their father and mother. In a tragic and frantic situation, the skills that they learned in the Boy Scouts helped them to remain level-headed and save a man’s life. Thank you to Michael and Logan for their heroism and to the Boy Scouts of America for teaching these two young men the skills they required that day to save their father.

Congratulations Michael and Logan LaRock!
