Snowmobilers reminded to stay on Pierce County trails, when open

Like the hills they sometimes ride, snowmobilers are finding this winter season to be an up-and-down proposition for conditions conducive to their sport.

Milder temperatures and unusual January rains have diminished the amount of snow covering trails in the county. Fortunately, that covering had been better over the Christmas-New Year's holidays late last month, when many people had more time off to enjoy snowmobiling activity.

And the trails' status has reflected the yo-yo pattern of the thermometer--earlier open and recently closed.

"We pushed to have them open for the holidays, when the kids were home from school," Pierce County Snowmobile Association President Mark Engnes said Friday.
