Ellsworth Village Board to consider golf cart ordinance

The Ellsworth Village Board will take up a proposed ordinance to allow modified golf carts on village streets.

Board members decided Monday to refer the proposed ordinance to the Street and Sidewalk and Health, License and Welfare committees for further study.

The proposal, offered by Rock and Jackie Erlandson, is similar to one on the books in Prescott. It allows what are known as “mobility devices” to be used by the disabled on village streets. The devices are built on a modified golf cart chassis. However, golf carts themselves are not permitted on village streets, and board members expressed the desire to make sure to limit such an ordinance to disabled drivers and their vehicles only to help them get around the village.

In other board action, a donation request for the Senior Grad Nite 2014 celebration at Ellsworth High School was approved unanimously, along with a CSM map for the Janet Arndt and Family Trust in the Town of Ellsworth, which falls under the ETZ Subdivision and Platting Boundary. The board also unanimously approved a Salary and Labor Committee recommendation for 2014 non-union and part-time employee wages and benefits, which will go up 2.5 percent, and to increase board member and citizen committee member per diem pay by $5 for each meeting category. Annual board member pay will stay the same as was set in 2006.

The board also unanimously accepted the resignation of Village Police Officer Adam Olson and approved selling a police squad car.

Action on the police union contract was tabled until all the votes to ratify the contract have been cast. Public Works Director Greg Engeset stated in his report to the board meetings with the engineering firm SEH on the village’s proposed chlorination process are still ongoing.

The Plan Commission reported to the board it had unanimously agreed to issue a conditional use permit to M.C. Companies LLC, Brown Street, to allow for mini-storage or self-storage facilities in a commercial district.
