County Board approves new Human Resources manager

The Pierce County Board of Supervisors last week approved the hiring of Ray Weitz as the county’s new Human Resources Manager.

Weitz comes from Pennsylvania, where he was Director of Human Resources for Indiana University of Pennsylvania since 2012. He was previously Human Resources Administrator for University of New Mexico-Gallup from 2011-2012 and Health Personnel Officer for the City of Milwaukee from 2008-2011.

Weitz said in his cover letter a chance to come back and work in his home state was too enticing to pass up.

“My background includes 20 years of human resource management experience and 25 years of labor relation experience, which includes both classified and unclassified functions,” he said.

Weitz is succeeding Sandy Langer, who retired at the end of 2013 after 30 years with the county. After Langer retired, the county board approved a revision of position duties from a Personnel Coordinator/Administrative Specialist (Langer’s job title) to a Human Resources Manager (Weitz’s title).

With the revision, one of the big changes is Weitz will manage interviewing and screening qualified applicants for positions at all levels, assist and advise supervisors on interviewing and selection processes for department heads. Previously, supervisors participated in all hirings.

A yearly salary of $65,000 was agreed upon. Administrative Coordinator JoAnn Miller said the county hopes to have Weitz on board by April 15.
