Texas teen dies from flu-related illness in St. Paul hospital

ST. PAUL -- Funeral services are set for a teenager from Texas who died from flu-related complications over the weekend at a St. Paul hospital.

17-year-old Max Schwolert was a healthy teenager who had been visiting relatives in western Wisconsin when he became ill. Schwolert developed a staph infection along with the flu and his condition deteriorated rapidly.

The Minnesota Department of Health says there is no evidence that this year's flu strain is more dangerous than those in recent years. But it's well known that the flu can set the stage for pneumonia and other potentially deadly infections, such as staph, even in healthy young people.

Schwolert had not had a flu shot, and his family is encouraging people to get vaccinated. Three people have died so far this season from flu-related complications in Minnesota.
