Area TU chapter wins grant for Trimbelle restoration

One of the overall goals of TU's Trimbelle River streambank improvements is to support the reintroduction of the once-native Eastern Brook Trout in the river. Submitted photo.

The Hudson-based Kiap-TU-Wish chapter of Trout Unlimited has been awarded a $5,000 Embrace-A-Stream grant to help fund a continuing habitat restoration project on the Trimbelle River, off CTH W, about five miles south of River Falls.

The chapter is calling the project "Bring Back the Natives" as it involves restoration of nearly 4,500 feet of stream habitat for Brook Trout and other aquatic species at the headwaters of the Trimbelle. The overall goal of this project is the reintroduction of the once native Eastern Brook Trout to the Trimbelle River.

The project will also work to reduce effects of agricultural run-off and sedimentation by stabilizing the stream bank and reduce sedimentation and nutrient flow to the Mississippi River.

Embrace-A-Stream is the flagship grant program for funding TU grassroots conservation efforts. Funding is provided primarily through the support of TU members, with additional support in 2013 from corporate sponsors.

Chapter President Tom Henderson said the group believes "the Trimbelle River has the potential to be a truly great trout stream. It has excellent cold-water springs that help carry it through hot summer days. The biggest problem is erosion, which we hope to improve."

Materials and labor for the entire project will eventually total about $200,000.

Trout Unlimited's bigger picture restoration strategy is to start at the headwaters and available public land, and over time move downstream to the Mississippi--as easements and opportunities on private land become available, Henderson said in a press release.

Along with chapter donations of cash and volunteer labor to this project, Kiap-TU-Wish is currently working to acquire additional grant money, private donations, and partnerships to help fund this and other restoration projects on the Trimbelle River. Donations from the public are welcomed.

The area TU chapter has about 250 members primarily from western Wisconsin and east-central Minnesota. For more information, visit
