An improvement for Hwy. 10 east of Ellsworth is planned by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Eau Claire office for the coming construction season.

The pavement will be milled off and new pavement put down on an 8.4 mile stretch of the highway from its east intersection with Hwy. 63 to CTH A in the Town of Salem, according to Northwest Region Project Manager Wendy Maves.

“We originally let the project for bids in September, but they came in higher than expected, so it’s going to be let again in April,” Maves said Friday.

At one point along the stretch, a box culvert will be replaced, she said. Although this will cause a side road to be closed, there will be relatively easy access to the highway via alternate means. Beam guards will be upgraded and new signs installed in conjunction with the project.

The work will be done under traffic, she said. It could start as early as June, but more likely around July 4, and completed before the end of October.

Completion of the new Radio Road interchange on Hwy. 35 just north of River Falls is another effort on this season’s projects list, the manager said.

Beams for the overhead bridge were set last year and that span will now be finished, she said. Most of the grading has been done; now comes the building of three roundabouts. The ones for Paulson and Radio roads are expected to be undertaken first.

“We want to get the traffic off of that temporary road,” she said, referring to the connection from Paulson, admitting officials would have liked to accomplish that last year, but there were weather delays.

Lighting also has to be installed and there’s other finalization, Maves said. The job is to be completed by Aug. 1 and she doesn’t anticipate the new interchange opening any earlier than that. The work is being done under traffic.

Elsewhere in this part of the DOT Eau Claire office’s region, an upgrade similar to the one for Hwy. 10 east of Ellsworth is foreseen on Hwy. 88 in Buffalo County this season, she said. The segment involved extends from Hwy. 35 near Alma. Its surface will be improved.
