UPDATE: Lights are back on in Hudson; crows to blame

The lights are back on in Hudson -- 50 minutes after crows "disrupted equipment" at an Xcel substation on the city's north side.

Xcel spokeswoman Liz Wolf Green in Eau Claire said a total of 6,333 customers were affected by the problem.

The interuption snarled traffic along Coulee Road and chased shoppers out of large retailers like Target and Good-Will, according to a passerby.

The utility's outage web site first forecast repairs would take another 30 minutes but things moved swiftly once Xcel crews were able to get through heavy traffic from offices on Hanley Road to the outage site off Baer Drive.

St. Croix County's Dispatch Center began receiving motorist reports of stop-lights gone dark around 4 p.m.

Another caller reported hearing a large explosion in the vicinity of the former Duro Bag facility off Baer Drive.

Outages were reported in areas of North Hudson and the town of Hudson as well.

Christian Community Home was said to operating on its backup power supply.

Hudson police were dispatched to a panic alarm at Buffalo Wild Wings which may have been related to the outage.
