Schools about to open doors for new term

School may have been out for the summer, but it’s soon back in for the other three seasons. Area school officials are getting ready for the return of students early next month. The Herald has compiled basic information on the new term, including hours, meal programs, new staff and more.


Ellsworth School District classes will start on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The four-year-old kindergarten (4YK) school day will run from 8:45-11:30 a.m. and from 12:30-3:15 p.m., operating five half-days per week. The grades kindergarten through four day will run from 8:30 a.m.-3:35 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The grades five through eight day will run from 7:35 a.m.-2:50 p.m. The grades nine through 12 day will run from 7:40 a.m.-2:50 p.m.

Panther Kids Club (PKC) will be available at Hillcrest and Prairie View elementary schools before school begins from 6-8:30 a.m. and afterward from 3:30-6 p.m. on school days, and from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on scheduled non-school weekdays for students in 4YK through fifth grades.


The 2013-14 term in the Elmwood School District will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3. The school day will run from 8 a.m.-3:20 p.m.

Orientation will be held this Wednesday for sixth graders at 6 p.m. in the high school (“Red Zone”) gym and for ninth graders at 7 p.m. in the same gym.

An open house will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Elementary school students will meet from 4-4:30 p.m. in the high school gym. Middle and high school students will meet from 4:45-5:15 p.m. in the same gym. The PTO will serve hot dogs and chips from 5-6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Plum City

The Plum City School District’s 2013-14 term will start on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

An open house will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 3:30-6 p.m. at both schools.

Classes will run from 8:03 a.m.-3:16 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for elementary, middle and high school students.

The four-year-old kindergarten (4YK) program will operate two days in Plum City and two days in Pepin. The local days will be Mondays and Wednesdays. Five-year-old kindergarten will be held full-time five days a week.

St. Francis

St. Francis School in Ellsworth will start a new term for students on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The school day will be from 7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. For 4YK, it will be from 7:45-10:45 a.m.

Breakfast will be offered beginning at 7:20 a.m. The cost is $1.50.

Lunch will be available from 11-11:25 a.m. for kindergarten through second grade students and from 11:35 a.m.-noon for third through fifth grade students. The cost is $2.25. Ala carte milk can be purchased for 30 cents.

Spring Valley

The first day of school in the Spring Valley School District, on Tuesday, Sept. 3, is for grades 4YK through five and six through nine only.

Grades 10 through 12 will start on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Students in grades 10 through 12 who are new to the district are encouraged to attend on Sept. 3.

This staggered start date is to allow for a smoother transition for middle school students and freshmen. Sept. 3 will be a regular school day for them, with all classes running as normally scheduled.

The school day will run from 8:06 a.m.-3:15 p.m. at the middle-high school. At the elementary school, it will run from 8:10 a.m.-3:03 p.m.
