Donald Rudulf Johnson

Donald Rudulf Johnson, age 98, of Ellsworth, WI passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Preferred Senior Living in Ellsworth, WI. He was born in Ellsworth Township, WI on September 7, 1919 to Chester and Hilda (Lind) Johnson. He attended Lindgren Country School and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1938. Growing up on a farm he was very interested in farming and was the first president of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in the Ellsworth High School. He worked on his parent's farm until being drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1941. He began his military service on February 21, 1942, he was severely wounded in Brest, France on August 25, 1944 and hospitalized in England for one year until Honorably Discharged on July 12, 1945. He received the Purple Heart. On February 21, 1943 in Spartanburg, SC he was united in marriage Gladys M. Beastrom his long time high school sweetheart. Upon his return from WWII, he was appointed the first Pierce County Veteran Service Officer. In 1948 he purchased a neighboring farm to the homestead where he was raised. In 1951 he was appointed Rural Letter Carrier of Hager City, which he served 29 years and retired in 1980. Donald was very active in his community. He was president of Hager Telecom, multiple roles at Laurel Presbyterian Church as a member, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He served 20 years as Chair Person of Trenton Township, served on several Pierce County Committees including one term as Pierce County Chairman. Memberships included the Bay City American Legion, 40 & 8 of Pierce County, VFW of Red Wing, Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans. In addition to farming over the years, other interests included Red Wing Camera Club, Boy Scout Troop Leader, Bee Keeping and he was an active member of the Rural Letter Carrier Association at both the State and National Levels. He was a faithful man of God and a gentleman always in good humor. He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Hilda Johnson; wife, Gladys. Donald is survived by his loving children, David R. (Nancy) Johnson, of Hager City, WI, Steven R. (Monica) Johnson of River Falls, WI, Jane Johnson of Shoreview, MN; five grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; special friend and Janet Larson of Ellsworth. Funeral services for Donald were 12:00 PM (Noon) on Wednesday, November 22nd at Bethel Covenant Church, Ellsworth, WI. Visitation was 10:30-12:00 prior to the service. Interment at Bethel Covenant Cemetery, Ellsworth, WI. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Pierce County Veterans Service Commission, Alzheimer's Association or Donor's Choice.
