Old Cowbelle: Dinner with Joyce

One Saturday, Sonia and I joined Joyce for dinner (lunch to some of you) at the Spring Valley Health Care Center. The residents are allowed to have an occasional guest for a meal, with pre-planned notice.

That day, we had the privilege of eating in the private dining room, which is used for such occasions. It gave us the feeling of being entertained by Joyce in the dining room at her farm home.

The residents and guests have a choice of the two entrees offered each day. One of the ladies goes around and asks each person their preference. (Just like in a nice restaurant).

The food was brought to each of us and then she closed the door, giving us quiet and privacy to enjoy our meal. The food was very good, and they use linen napkins. (Which I never do at home.)

It’s fun to visit Joyce in her comfortable “digs,” knowing that she is receiving the best of care.

We old folks are so blessed to have Health Care Centers when we can no longer live by ourselves in our homes.

I see it looming on my horizon too.

It was interesting to hear the Bible passages chosen by the confirmands a while ago at Our Savior’s Church. Each one had a special meaning for them, and all were so significant. Several of them struck a personal note to me. One was my favorite Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength.”

One was Psalm 139:16, “Your eyes saw my unformed body before I was born, and all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Another was from Jeremiah, “I have plans for you, not to harm you but to prosper you.”

Applying these to I have always believed that God has a plan for each of us to do or be in our lives here on earth. I believe that from birth He meant for me to put down things in writing.

BUT…I also believe He has given me a “modest” gift of writing. He didn’t endow me with a “huge talent” that would make me rich and famous, knowing that it could go to my head and lead me to think too highly of myself…wrecking His purpose.

I think He gave me “just enough” ability and “just enough” courage to write about His plan of salvation, Jesus, with the hope those words might touch the hearts of some people somewhere. And to give those readers the courage to also spread the Good News.

His plans are so awesome. I hope the plans He has for those five confirmands will develop over the years to be exactly what He had in mind for them even before they were born.

Life is an interesting trip!
