Non-conference win will help Spring Valley
SPRING VALLEY -- If Spring Valley High School's football team was undefeated or winless, its non-conference contest against Luck Friday at Syverson Park would not have mattered compared to a Dunn-St. Croix game at this time of the season.
But because the Cardinals are fighting for a playoff berth, their 35-20 win mattered a great deal.
Prep teams in Wisconsin qualify for the playoffs by winning majority of their conference games. But in SV's case, the best they can do, if they beat winless Colfax on Thursday, is go 3-3 in the D-SC.
However by beating Luck, Valley ensures itself of a winning season if they beat the Vikings. And that means the Cardinals will have the best chance possible of making the WIAA playoff field if they need teams at .500 in their leagues to complete it.
And usually they do.
Usually Spring Valley's best teams have good running backs. But none of them, even on their state championship teams, have ever rushed for the amount of yards in one single game as Tyler Bosshart has done.
Bosshart set the school's single game record with 300 on 27 carries. The record was set back in the 1980s and once held by head wrestling coach Carter Turner.
"That's amazing when you think about all the good running backs they've over years that non have ever ran for 300 yards or more until Tyler did," SV head coach Matt Ducklow. "It's also nice to be able to do so in your final home game of your high school career."
Bosshart had four of the Cards' five touchdowns. Three of them were big play runs of 63, 80 and 64 yards from scrimmage. He also scored from four yards away.
SV's other score was a one-yard run by Russell Hauge.
Spring Valley led 21-14 at halftime and put the contest away in the second half with Bosshart's 63-yards TD plus Hague's touchdown.
"This is the first year we've put in zone blocking schemes for the line on offense and the back have gotten them down," Dukclow said. "Our backs are finally seeing the running lanes opened up by the line and their using the space. A couple of Bosshart's touchdowns were on cutbacks."
Luck's Taylor Horsager scored twice on touchdown runs of one and three yards. Luck quarterback Carson Giller threw a 60-yard TD pass to Nick Morgan late in the fourth quarter.
SV completed just one pass on the evening, a 12-yarder from Dylan Webster to Bosshart.
Friday's game was the last home contest for SV seniors Bosshart, Brandon Colbenson, Brian Colbenson, Connor Birkel, and Cory Lasure.
