Third quater dooms Ellsworth to loss against River Falls

Riley O'Neil and Josh Fuchs(88) try to bring down River Falls' Austin Johnson.

River Falls' prep football team scored 21 points in the third quarter to overpower Ellsworth in a 28-6 non-conference victory Friday. It's the Wildcats' third win in a row over Ellsworth and the Panthers' 14th straight loss.

However, for the first half, Ellsworth stood tall against the bigger and deeper Wildcats, giving up only a 67-yard touchdown run by RF running back Dylan Dock in the first quarter. EHS stood to get the ball back to start the second half to tie the game or even take the lead.

But after playing near mistake-free football in the first half, Ellsworth fell apart in the third quarter. Turnovers, mistakes, penalties, missed assignments, a quarter full of mistakes turned what was a close game into a rout.

An Ellsworth penalty plus a good punt return set-up the 'Cats first touchdown in the third quarter, a five-yard run by Dock. A big pass play of 30 yards from quarterback Ryan Kuselik to Connor Schug set up River Falls' next TD, a five-yard run by big running back Ben Wunrow, who, on the Wildcats' next possession, scored on a 61-yard run from scrimmage. That possession was set up by an interception.

River Falls, 2-0 overall, switched to running the option in the second have which proved too effective for Ellsworth to handle.

Ellsworth steadied themselves in the fourth quarter. They made a goaline stand to prevent the running clock and they used a botched River Falls' punt to set up their own scoring drive, a one-yard TD run by Lucas Cuddy, who was playing his first game of the season after being sick the week before.
