No repeat for the Purple Panthers, Oconto Falls wins state semi match

Cory Deiss has the advantage on Oconto Falls' Clayton Selsmeyer.

MADISON - One only set of Panthers would emerge from the semifinal match between No. 2 ranked Oconto Falls and No. 3 Ellsworth victorious at the WIAA Team State Wrestling Meet at the UW Fieldhouse. Unfortunately it was the cats in Orange as OF won 33-26 Saturday afternoon.

Oconto Falls, 18-1 overall, built up a 27-3 lead after the first six matches. The Panthers won several close matches at 160, 171 and 285 pounds and scored key falls at 215 and at 103. EHS' only winner was Corey Deiss at 189 who dominated his match with OF's Clayton Selsmeyer in a 3-0 decision.

Ellsworth, 16-6 overall, crept back into the match, getting wins from Sam Huppert at 119, a tech. fall from Roarke Langer at 125 and a win by Austin Welch at 130. But Oconto Falls clinched the dual when Cullan Morrissey, a runner-up in last week's state individual meet, pinned third place finisher D.J. Yarwood in 3:23 at 135.

EHS also got wins from Zach Reister at 140, Levi Kuesel at 145 and their lone pin of the meet from Tanner Eggenberger at 152 in 4:22

No. 4 Lodi was defeated by No. 5 Pewaukee 35-20 in the other Division 2 semifinal. This will be the first Division 2 team state final to feature teams other than Ellsworth, Lodi and Luxemburg-Casco since 1997 when Freedom defeated Waterford 38-20. It's also the earliest Ellsworth has been eliminated at state since losing in the 2006 state semifinals.
