Last two county teams eliminated from regionals

Both Prescott and Elmwood were defeated Thursday evening in WIAA regional tournament semifinals in girls basketball.

The Cardinals were beaten at home by St. Croix Falls 48-45 in Division 3 while Elmwood lost to Alma-Pepin 53-50 in Division 4 at Alma.

Prescott, led by senior Kallie Krech rallied from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit with under 3:00 to go and had the ball with eight second remaining to tie the contest, but failed to get off a shot.

Most of the favorites won last night in the second round of the girls' state high school basketball regionals. Games were played in Divisions Two, Three, and Four, and only three of the 48 top-seeds lost - Rice Lake in Division Two, Saint Croix Central in D-Three, and Niagara in Division-Four. Both defending champions who are still alive made it to the next round, Grafton and Amherst. And all three A-P number-ones were victorious - Monroe, Cuba City, and Minong Northwood.

The girls' regional finals will be played tomorrow. Also, the boys' tournament resumes tonight with sectional openers in all four divisions.
