Carter Turner got a good idea of what the Spring Valley-Elmwood wrestling will need to do win Saturday's WIAA Division 3 Boyceville Regional Tournament.

Exceed the seed.

SVE's head coach said the team wrestled up to their seeds in last Saturday's ninth annual Big Rivers /Dunn-St. Croix Wrestling Jamboree at River Falls High School but they'll need to go beyond them to win the regional for the first time since 1999.

The winner of the regional tournament will compete in Tuesday team sectional meet.

In tournament competition so far this season SV-Elmwood's highest finish was a tie for second at the Shell Lake Invitational with Boyceville.

In the same regional as the Redbirds are No. 3 ranked Boyceville and No. 9 Clear Lake. On top of those team are solid programs from Glenwood City, Shell Lake and Turtle Lake-Clayton.

"We're going to have to win matches where we're not expected to do so," Turner said. "We wrestled up to where we were seeded on Saturday and we had some good performances. But we need to go beyond those seeds in order to win the regional."

One team which knows how win regional titles is No. 2 Ellsworth. The Panthers will compete in the Division 2 St. Croix Central Regional aiming for their 41st regional crown. While the Panthers are favored to win, the field features some solid teams from host SCC, which won over 20 dual meets this season to Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, Prescott, Durand, Baldwin-Woodville and Black River Falls.

The top two wrestlers from the regional move on to the individual sectional meet the following weekend (Division 2 is in Amery and Division 3 is at Osseo-Fairchild). The team sectionals are at Baldwin-Woodville for Division 2 and at Clear Lake in Division 3.

Josh Farr is a defending regional champ for Prescott. Ellsworth's defending champs are Roarke Langer, D.J. Yarwood, Zac Reister, Levi Kuesel, Tanner Eggenberger, Noah McLay and Parker Hines. Brady Webb won a regional title as well for Spring Valley-Elmwood.

Ellsworth will look to match their showing last season when they scored 300 points in winning the West Salem-Bangor Regional and qualifed the entire team for the individual sectional meet. Both PHS and SVE will look to more sectional qualifiers. Prescott only had one and SVE had just two.
