Five area D-1 wrestlers move to quarterfinals

MADISON - Five area wrestlers advanced to the Division 1 quarterfinal round this afternoon at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Meet at the Kohl Center.

It was a good day for River Falls as all three of its wrestlers made the quarterfinals. Logan Cudd topped Shawano's Jared Kust at 125 pounds by a 9-3 decision. Tysom Bystrom decisioned Josh Wipperfurth of Waunakee 7-2 at 189.

But it was the Wildcats' Adam Figi and New Richmond's Joel Neumann with the most dramatic wins of the day. Figi scored four points in the final :20 seconds of his match with Milwaukee Bradley Tech's Vernon Rash to tie the score at 6-6 and used an escape to win in double overtime 7-6. It took Neumann four overtimes to win by criteria over Stoughton's Jessie Nelson at heavyweight. Neumann held down Nelson for the :30 seconds of the sudden death OT.

Hudson, however, did not have good first round. The Raiders only winner was Nick Larson at 152 by a 16-8 decision over Brian Smith of West Allis Central. Gordon Johnson lost 3-0 at 119 to Franklin's Roman Stiff and Tanner Owens was beaten 14-8 by Jake Maechtle of Port Washington at 135.

New Richmond's Shane Blackman lost his first round match at 103 by a 9-2 score to Waukesha South's Bill Prochniewski.
