PLUM CITY - You needed to be a baseball diehard to handle the icy 20-mph winds and light snow showers which marked Sunday's St. Croix Valley League opener.

And die-hard is exactly what the Plum City Blues did at the plate against the St. Croix Falls River Bandits. The Blue had just three hits while striking out 12 times in a 5-2 loss at Legion Park.

Winning pitcher Trevor Todd had nine of those strikeouts as he went six innings. Will Ball went the rest of the way to get the save.

SCF scored three times in the top of the seventh to take a 5-0 lead. Two of those runs came from catcher Steve Siqueiros' two-RBI single. The Blues didn't score until their last at bats when they plated two runs, but they were two too late.

Zach Watkins, Tony Garner and Cory Breidung had all the hits for PC. Both Breidung and Shaun Miley scored for the Blues. Travis O'Keefe drove in a run. Brock Luehman had two hits for St. Croix Falls.

Garner took the loss despite striking out eight in five innings and tossing a two-hitter.
