Braun wins his fifth straight Silver Slugger Award

Milwaukee Brewers' outfielder Ryan Braun has won his fifth straight Silver Slugger Award for being the best offensive player at his position. Braun led the National League with 41 homers, 108 runs scored, and a .987 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. And he was second in the N-L with 112 R-B-I's, 191 hits, and a .595 slugging average. On Wednesday, Braun was named one of five finalists to win back-to-back league M-V-P awards - but the odds-on favorite for that honor is catcher Buster Posey of the World Series champion San Francisco Giants. Braun joined New York Yankees' shortstop Derek Jeter in winning five Silver Slugger awards. Ten of the 18 recipients were first-time winners, including Posey. Former Brewers' first baseman Prince Fielder won the honor for his position in the American League. The Louisville Slugger bat company started the Silver Slugger Awards in 1980, as an extension of the Silver Bat awards given to each league's batting champion.
