Minnesota Sports Roundup: Wolves open post All-Star break against Philadelphia

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Timberwolves open their post All-Star break schedule at home tonight as they bring in the Philadelphia 76ers.

Minnesota hopes the second half goes a whole lot better than the first half ended as they went into the break having lost 16 of 19. Things haven't been much better for Philly as they'll enter tonight's game having dropped three of four. While the T-Wolves have been dealing with a whole host of injuries including to Kevin Love there is hope that Andrei Kirilenko could return tonight after a five game absence dealing with a quad injury. The 76ers aren't exactly healthy either as they continue to miss one of their stars in Andrew Bynum. He's out with an injured knee. Reports have him still a week or two from returning. The Wolves and 76ers will tip-off tonight from Target Center at 7 p.m.


The Minnesota Timberwolves announced that they'll honor Tuskegee Airman Hiram Mann tonight prior to their game versus Philadelphia. The T-wolves are honoring Black History Month throughout February by recognizing accomplishments of influential and inspirational leaders in the Twin Cities community. Mann is a retired Lieutenant Colonel and graduated from Tuskegee Army Air Field Flying Training Program in June of 1944. He flew combat missions in World War II and served a total of 30 years in the military. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military pilots in the U.S. armed forces.


Tonight the University of Minnesota Men's basketball team hits the road for their lone matchup of the season against the 18th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. This will be the first trip to the Schottenstein Center since January 9th, 2011. While the Gophers are coming off a 72-51 loss at Iowa the Buckeyes are coming off a disappointing loss as well having lost 71-49 at Wisconsin on Sunday. Both teams are eager to once again find their stride. After opening the season winning 15 of their first 16 match ups the Gophers have limped their to the final couple of weeks having lost seven of ten. Ohio State started off hot as well winning 17 of 21 but enter tonight having lost three of four. Game time tonight is set for 6 p.m. from Columbus.


The Minnesota State High School tournament season gets underway today in St. Paul at Xcel Energy Center beginning with the girls high school hockey tournament. The wrestling tournament takes center stage next weekend followed by the boys state hockey tournament. Later in March, Xcel Energy Center will also play host to the WCHA Final Five.


The Minnesota State High School Girls State Hockey Tournament begins today with the Class A field getting under way at 11 am. Alexandria starts the action against Red Wing. Mound Westonka, in their first tournament appearance, follows at 1 p.m. when they take on Blake. Blake beat the 2012 Class A champs in their section finals to guarantee a new champion will be crowned. Meanwhile, the #1 seeded Warroad Warriors will take on New Ulm at 6 p.m. followed by Hibbing/Chisholm against South St. Paul at 8. The Class AA field will take to the ice starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow, semi-finals dominate the ice on Friday followed by the championship games for both classes on Saturday.


The Wild depart for Edmonton today as they get ready for a two game stint against the Northwest Division. The Oilers are first on the agenda tomorrow night from Rexall Place followed by a trip to the Saddledome in Calgary on Saturday night to battle the Flames. Despite a flu bug running through the team the Wild are coming off a 3-2 win on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings and a solid 3-1-1 record in their last 5. The Wild face the Oilers tomorrow night at 8:30.
