State wrestling tournament underway this evening for county wrestlers
MADISON - Pierce County wrestlers in the Division 2 and 3 prelims will wrestle tonight on the first day of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.
Prelim wrestling in Divisions 2 and 3 will start as soon as those in Division 1 quarterfinals conclude, approximately at 7:15 p.m. Wrestling tonight are grapplers who finished second and third in their respective Division 2 and 3 sectionals. Sectional champs are automatically byed into the quarterfinal round which wrestles tomorrow starting at 11:15 a.m.
Spring Valley/Elmwood's lone wrestler in the meet, Zach Newton will wrestle Wyatt Weiler of Auburndale at 145 pounds. Newton is a junior with a 35-10 record while Weiler is a sophomore with a 33-11 record. Newton finished second in the sectional meet only to defending state champ Austin Moe of Glenwood City.
In Division 2, Prescott's lone wrestler, Troy Urman has to face Mosinee's Elliott Sparby at 145 pounds. He is a junior with a 43-10 record while Urman is 29-11 and also a junior.
Ellsworth will be busy tonight as they have four wrestlers in action and all four will be making their state meet debuts. At 106 pounds John Albarado will take on Two Rivers's Paul Bianchi, a freshman with a 46-2 record. Albarado is a sophomore at 19-13 overall. At 126 there will be a sneak preview to next weekend's state team tournament match-up as Ellsworth junior Brad Cain, 33-17, faces Luxemburg-Casco sophomore Mason Berceau, 37-14. At 138 Panther freshman Tristen Mueller, 32-21, takes on senior wrestler Aaron Hesgard of Monroe, 38-10. Jake Murphy will be the final EHS wrestler in action as he goes up against junior Brady Jacobson of Ripon at 195. Murphy is a senior with a 27-12 record while Jacobseon is a junior 26-11 overall.
