Sunday State News Briefs: UW's Graff takes third in NCAA meet

DES MOINES, Iowa - University of Wisconsin wrestler Tyler Graff capped a successful campaign by claiming the bronze medal yesterday at the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Des Moines.

The 133-pound competitor won two matches Saturday, including a 6-3 decision of A.J. Schopp of Edinboro to take third place. In the first match he beat Minnesota's Chris Dardanes 7-4. Graff is now a three-time All-American for UW, the ninth in school history.

Penn State won its third straight national championship, just edging out Oklahoma State 123-119. Minnesota was third with 103 points and Iowa fourth with 73 points. Wisconsin finished 27th with 16.5 points.


Sophomore Ivy Martin helped lead the University of Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team to a 15th place finish at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. Martin paced the Badgers in a half-dozen events, including a 400-yard Freestyle relay team which finished 12th. Martin finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and led the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a 10th-place finish.


A split squad of Los Angeles Angels followed a strong pitching performance by Garrett Richards to a 5-1 win over the Brewers Saturday. Richards allowed just one run and three hits in six and one-third innings on the mound. He did allow a lead-off triple to Milwaukee's Jean Segura in the fourth. Aramis Ramirez doubled Segura in. Milwaukee started Marco Estrada took the loss. He allowed just two hits in five innings of work, giving up two earned runs in the first inning. Also on Saturday, the Brewers optioned right-handed pitcher Michael Olmstead to Class AAA.
