Minnesota Sports Briefs: Twins get series wins over Red Sox

BOSTON -- Minnesota's Oswaldo Arcia lifted a two-run home run to guide the Twins to 5-3 win over the Red Sox. The Twins won three straight to take the four-game series at Fenway Park.

Kevin Correia allowed three runs over five-and-a-third innings for the win. Glen Perkins tallied his eighth save for Minnesota, which has won four-of-five. John Lackey gave up five runs, one earned, while striking out eight in seven frames for the loss. Daniel Nava, Dustin Pedroia and Stephen Drew each knocked in a run for Boston, which has lost six-of-seven overall. The Twins begin a nine-game homestand with a three-game series against Baltimore tonight at Target Field.


The University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Vikings have agreed on a deal that will allow the Vikings to use TCF Bank Stadium for the 2014 and 2015 NFL seasons while the team's new Vikings stadium is being built As part of the agreement, the Vikings will pay the U-of-M $250,000 dollars per game for the two seasons. The team will also share $50,000 per game in concessions, advertising and sponsorship revenue. A three million cap for each NFL season is in place. The deal also allows for two additional seasons, if necessary. The U-of-M Board of Regents will vote on the proposal during its meeting today.


Wayzata's Tim Herron fired an opening round one-under-par-71 yesterday at the PGA Tour's Player's Championship. Herron is tied for 54th place after the first round. Roberto Castro tied a course record by firing a nine-under-par-63 in yesterday's first round and is all alone atop the leaderboard. Iowan Zach Johnson is tied for second place at six-under-par, along with Rory McIlroy. Tiger Woods opened with a five-under-par-67.


The Minnesota Lynx are slated for a late morning workout at their practice area of the Target Center today as part of WNBA training camp. Lynx star player Seimone Augustus is scheduled to join her teammates for today's practice, which will be her first with the team this season. Augustus played professionally in Russia and her team's season just ended with her team finishing in second-place. Today will be the fifth practice session in five days for the Lynx and the squad will get tomorrow off. Minnesota opens the preseason slate against Washington on May 18th in Bismarck, North Dakota. The regular season opener is set for June 1st at the Target Center against Connecticut.

The University of Minnesota men's tennis team takes on Virginia Commonwealth later this morning in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Golden Gophers are 14-10 on the season, while VCU is 20-6. The match begins at 10 a.m. in Charlottesville, Virginia, where the host Virginia will take on Fairleigh Dickinson in the other NCAA match at 1 p.m. The winners face off tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the second round.


Thousands of Minnesota anglers are getting set for this weekend's fishing opener. Even though many lakes in northern Minnesota are still frozen over, Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Chief Dirk Peterson is optimistic there will be good fishing where there is open water. There are about 1.2 million licensed anglers in Minnesota. Governor Dayton will be celebrating the opener in the Park Rapids area.


An amendment aimed at fighting the spread of Asian carp in Minnesota's waterways passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate yesterday. The Strategic Response to Asian Carp Invasion act was co-sponsored by Senators Al Franken (DFL-Minneapolis) and Amy Klobuchar (DFL-Plymouth). The measure will enable the federal government to work more effectively with state and local agencies to help fight the Asian carp threat. Franken says the spread of Asian carp in Minnesota's lakes and rivers would prove disastrous for the state's fishing, boating and tourism industries, which support thousands of jobs and contribute billions of dollars to the state's economy.


Elko Speedway will host a 250-lap ARCA-sanctioned race on Saturday, June 1st. The stock car racing series made the announcement yesterday. The raceway hosted an ARCA race for the first time last year and will add 50-laps to this year's event. A year ago, the 200-lap main event went to driver Brennan Poole. The ARCA series is a short track circuit that includes several up-and-coming drivers, as well as veteran regional stock car pilots. Elko Speedway is located near Elko, Minnesota, about 35-miles south of the Twin Cities.


NASCAR is headed to Darlington Raceway for this weekends Southern 500. David Ragan came out of two big wrecks to take the checkers at Talladega last week, but Jimmie Johnson still holds the points lead. He's up 41 points on Carl Edwards and 59 points on Dale Earnhardt Jr.
