Elmwood baseball, EPC softball face big contests Thursday
ELMWOOD - The Elmwood High School baseball team and the Elmwood/Plum City prep softball co-op have put themselves in position to win their respective conference titles with important games against Alma/Pepin Thursday.
Elmwood's baseball team crushed defending Dunn-St. Croix Conference Small Division co-champs Spring Valley Tuesday by a 16-6 score in five innings at Elmwood Tuesday. The Raiders came back from a 5-0 deficit by plating eight runs in the bottom of the third inning and then put across four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. EHS's top hitters were Josh Wells three hits with three RBIs, Logan Wolf two hits with four RBIs and Travis Joyce hit a triple.
Meanwhile, across Hwy. 72 at Raider Field, EPC split a doubleheader with Elk Mound. They lost 3-0 in Game 1 but came back to win Game 2 by a 7-6 score. McKayla Brunner's three-run homer in the top of the seventh helped her team to take a 7-4 lead. Elk Mound rallied in their last at bats but EPC held on to give Brunner the win. Teammate Heidi Webb drove in two runs.
Getting at least one win against the Mounders puts EPC at 11-3 in the D-SC standings along with the Mounders. Alma/Pepin is 13-1. If EPC can sweep the Eagles on Thursday at home they will clinch a tie for the league title. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
Elmwood's baseball team is 4-0 in the D-SC Small, two games behind Alma/Pepin who is 6-0. Elmwood takes on A/P Thursday in Elmwood beginning at 5 p.m. The Raiders remaining conference schedule has them at Plum City Monday and at Alma/Pepin Tuesday. A win would put them in position to at least clinch a tie for the title against the Blue Devils.
