Sunday State Sports Briefs: UW softball eliminated from NCAA Tourney

EUGENE, Ore. - The best softball season in the history for the University of Wisconsin-Madison has finally come to a close. Pitcher Cassandra Darraha only gave up three hits, but two of them were home runs as No. 3 ranked Oregon knocked the No. 25 ranked Badgers out of the NCAA tournament, 3-0.

Two Oregon pitchers combined to shut out Wisconsin on four hits. The Badgers end the season with a record of 44-13 and won twice yesterday over Brigham Young and North Carolina to keep playing in the double-elimination tournament.

For the first time in 25 years, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is conducting a nationwide search for a head baseball coach. Tom Lechnir's contract isn't being renewed. Although Lechnir has 728 Titan victories on his resume, and had been a player, an assistant and then head coach for 34 years, he isn't coming back. He led the Titans to a national title in 1994 and claimed 12 WIAC championships. But, the UW-Oshkosh had won just two conference titles in the last 14 seasons.
