Minnesota Sports Roundup: Twins end homestand 2-7 thanks to sweep to Boston

MINNEAPOLIS - Boston's Dustin Pedroia belted a two-run homer and knocked in three as the Red Sox topped the Twins 5-1 to sweep the three-game series at a rainy Target Field.

The game was delayed for more than three hours due to rain. Will Middlebrooks added a solo homer in Boston's fifth straight win. John Lackey gave up an unearned run on one hit over six innings of work as he improved to 2-and-4. Trevor Plouffe scored the lone run on a throwing error for the Twins, who have dropped five in-a-row. Joe Mauer saw his 15-game hitting streak end. Pedro Hernandez allowed three runs and nine hits in four-and-a-third frames as he slipped to 2-and-1. The Twins are at Atlanta tonight for a three-game interleague series.


The Minnesota State-Mankato baseball team will be making its third appearance in the last four years at the NCAA Division II College Baseball World Series in North Carolina. The Mavericks knocked off rival St. Cloud State 17-1 in yesterday's NCAA Regional Final game in Mankato. An 11-run seventh inning was key for Minnesota State-Mankato. Competition at the D-II World Series is set to begin on Saturday, May 26th in Cary, North Carolina.


Minnesota's Monica Wright scored a game-high 16 points to pace the Minnesota Lynx to a 74-57 win over the Washington Mystics in an exhibition game in Bismarck, North Dakota on Saturday. Rebekkah Brunson added 12 points and six rebounds for Minnesota. The Lynx close out preseason play against the Connecticut Sun tomorrow at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The regular season opener is slated for June 1st at home against the Sun.


Anglers who catch a tagged walleye on Lake Mille Lacs this summer will receive a prize All they have to do is return the orange tag to the Minnesota DNR to receive a free fishing lure. Fisheries biologists are tagging and releasing 20-thousand walleye to better understand the lake's population. The orange tags are labeled "REWARD" and can be returned to DNR Fisheries in Aitkin to tag return boxes at businesses around Lake Mille Lacs.
