Minnesota Sports Briefs: Braves get early lead and beat Twins 5-1

ATLANTA - Atlanta's Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer in the first as the Braves went on to a 5-1 win over the Twins last night in Georgia.

Freddie Freeman and Andrelton Simmons also drove in a run for Atlanta, which has won four straight since dropping five out of six. Julio Teheran allowed one run over eight-and-a-third innings to improve to 3-1 while Cory Gearrin recorded the final out for a save. Josh Willingham blasted a ninth-inning, solo homer for Minnesota, which has lost six straight. Kevin Correia allowed five runs over four innings to fall to 4-4. The same two teams play tonight in Atlanta.


The Twins optioned pitcher Pedro Hernandez to Triple-A Rochester on Monday and recalled pitcher Caleb Thielbar from Rochester. Hernandez went 2-and-1 with a 5.85 ERA in eight games including six starts with the Twins. Thielbar had a 3.76 ERA in 17 outings with Rochester.


Braves relief pitcher Eric O'Flaherty is slated to have Tommy John surgery this afternoon. The procedure will be performed by noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews. O'Flaherty will likely be on the shelf for a year. He was 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA in 19 games this season. The Braves are currently hosting the Twins.


The Minnesota Lynx host the Connecticut Sun tonight in their preseason finale at Target Center. The Lynx crushed the Washington Mystics 74-57 in Bismarck, North Dakota on Saturday. The Lynx open the regular season on June 1st against Connecticut.


Guard Malik Smith is following his head coach from Florida International to Minnesota. Smith signed his tender to transfer and play with the Golden Gophers on Monday. The junior averaged 14.1 points per game last season. Smith will be eligible to play right away pending an NCAA waiver based on a possible APR induced postseason ban at FIU. New Gopher head coach Richard Pitino has now added three new players to the team since he was hired in April.


The NFL owners meetings continue in Boston today. League owners are expected to award Super Bowl 50 to the new San Francisco 49ers stadium in Santa Clara, California. Super Bowl 50 will be played in 2016. The Vikings have put in a bid to host the big game in 2018, 2019, or 2020. The 2018 game location will be announced one year from now. Miami's Sun Life Stadium is also a candidate, but taxpayer improvements were recently shot down. Moving the draft and scouting combine are also being considered.


Well-known NASCAR driver Ken Schrader says he will race at the ARCA Racing Series event set for Elko Speedway next month. Schrader will pilot a stock car in the Akona 250, a 250-lap main event race set for the Minnesota raceway on Saturday, June 1st. The 57-year-old Schrader will be making his 62nd career start in an ARCA event and will be 58-years-old when he competes at Elko. He just won the ARCA race in Toledo, Ohio over the weekend. That victory made him the oldest winner in ARCA series history. Schrader was a mainstay racer on the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, winning on the top circuit four times since his rookie season in 1985. Elko Speedway is located near Elko-New Market, Minnesota about 35 miles south of the Twin Cities.


NASCAR will announce its 2014 Hall of Fame class tomorrow. Five new members will be selected from a list of 25 nominees. Among the 25 up for election are 14 drivers and three team owners.


The PGA Champions Tour visits St. Louis for the Senior PGA Championship this week. Minnesota native Tom Lehman is one of the pre-tourney favorites. He won the major event in 2010 when it was played in Colorado. This year's host course, Bellerive Country Club, has hosted the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Senior Open and two U.S. Mid-Amateur championships. The course will also host the 100th annual PGA Championship in 2018.
