Spring Valley nine upsets Alma/Pepin to win regional title

PEPIN - Continuing a winning streak which stretches back to the end of the regular season, the Spring Valley High School baseball team upset No. 8 ranked and top-seeded Alma/Pepin 3-1 to win the WIAA Division 4 regional tournament Thursday.

Just as with Elmwood, the Cardinals lost both games vs. the Eagles, 12-3 overall, during the regular season by scores of 9-5 and 5-1. But SV turned the tables thanks to better defense and pitching. Valley has won four games in a row. The regional title is their first since 2010.

Spring Valley will play in the Shell Lake Sectional tournament Tuesday starting approximately at 1 p.m. against No. 6 ranked Greenwood, which beat Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 2-1 in their regional final yesterday as well. The other half of the bracket has Washburn against the winner of today's Bruce at Prairie Farm regional final. That game will start at 11 a.m. The finals will be at 4 p.m.
