Campbell places fourth at state track, Freier and Smith both qualify for finals

LA CROSSE - Ellsworth's Alex Campbell will come away with a podium finish in his final WIAA State Track and Field Meet.

Campbell placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, five inches, which is the same mark as his seed going into the state meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the UW-La Crosse campus.

The winning jump was by Seymour junior Sandy Cohen, who leaped 45-6. Cohen is being recognized as one of the top athletes in the state as he has received several Division I college basketball scholarship offers.

Campbell's EHS teammate, junior Brett Freier, will be competing tomorrow in the 300-meter IM hurdles finals. Freier was the last to make the cut as he finished 10th in the prelims with a time of :41.69 seconds.

Also qualifying for tomorrow's finals is Prescott's Sam Smith. He ran an eighth-best time in the prelims of the 200-meter dash in :23.22 and he had the second fastest time in the 400-meter dash at :49.68.

Smith, was also part of Prescott's qualifying 1600-meter relay team. The Cardinal quartet of Smith, a senior, junior Pat Ballosh, junior Jack Geiger and senior Cole Hauenstein ran the fourth best time in the trial heats at 3:26.29.

Hauenstein will run in the 800 tomorrow and senior Nick Jacobsen will compete in the shot put.

Elmwood/Plum City junior Sarah Gilles was another individual qualifier as she finished fifth in the 300-meter low hurdle prelims in :49.24 seconds. She'll also be with EPC's 1600-meter relay team as they finished seventh in 4:14.11 to qualify for tomorrow finals. Other team members are senior Marah Boyer, senior Heather Von Holtum and junior Elaina Danzinger. EPC's 3200-meter relay team will be competing tomorrow.

In other results involving Pierce County athletes from this morning's competition: In Division 2 girls Prescott's Victoria Simones, competing in her final state meet, finished 12th in both the 800 and 1600-meter runs. She'll compete with PHS's 3200-meter relay team tomorrow.

In the Division 3 boys' meet, Spring Valley junior Tyler O'Keefe finished 14th in the 400-meter dash; SV's 1600-meter relay team finished 13th and Elmwood/Plum City's was 15th in preliminary competition; EPC's 3200-meter relay team finished 14th. EPC senior Seth Jones runs in the 800-meter finals tomorrow.

In the Division 3 girls meet, Spring Valley sophomore Sara King was 10th in the 800 while Danzinger finished 11th. SV sophomore Sam O'Brien finished 16th in the 100-meter dash time trials. EPC's 800-meter relay team placed in 12th, just a second out of the top 10 to qualify.
