Smith takes second; EPC, Prescott 1600 relay teams also place

LA CROSSE - An ample amount of Pierce County prep track and field athletes placed today in the WIAA state meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the UW-La Crosse campus.

Prescott's Sam Smith finished second in the 400-meter dash and only because the winner, Sam Tiahnybik of Waukesha Catholic Memorial, ran a Division 2 state record time of :48.26 seconds, beating the old record of :48.28 set by Mt. Horeb's Pete Nowka in 1985. Smith broke the tape in :49 seconds even. He also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash.

Pierce County saw two of its 1600-meter relay teams finish third Prescott's boys team of Smith, fellow senior Cole Hauenstein and juniors Pat Ballosh and Jack Geiger. Their time was 3:21.84 and two times ahead of them, Shorewood's 3:19.62 and Mt. Horeb's 3:21.03 both broke the old D-2 state record of 3:21.67 set by Arcadia back in 2006. Elmwood/Plum City's 1600 team helped EPC finish the meet on a positive note with their bronze medal finish in 4:09.29. Team members are juniors Elaina Danzinger and Sarah Gilles and seniors Marah Boyer and Heather Von Holtum. Edgar placed first in 4:01.66

Gilles also made the awards podium by finishing fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles. Also finishing fifth was Hauenstein in the 800.

Spring Valley's Zac Webster didn't add to his title total after winning the triple jump yesterday but still finished third in the long jump in 20 feet, 10 inches and sixth in the high jump at six feet. SV's Julian Manley took seventh in the 1600-meter run.

Both the Prescott and Elmwood/Plum City girls' 3200-meter relay teams finished in ninth and Ellsworth's Brett Freier finished 10th in the 300-meter IM hurdles.

EPC's Seth Jones finished 12th in the 800 and Prescott's Nick Jacobsen was 16th in the shot put.

Spring Valley's boys team finished sixth in the Division 3 team standings with 26 points. Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs was first with 48 points and Melrose-Mindoro second with 46 points. In Division 2 boys, Prescott finished in 12th place with 20 points and Ellsworth tied for 40th with five points. Shorewood won the team title with 44 points and Catholic Memorial was second with 37.

Elmwood/Plum City's girls team placed 24th with 10 points.
