BREWERS ROUNDUP: Bullpen suffers another meltdown as Arizona wins 5-3

Jim Henderson walked the bases loaded before giving up the deciding hit in the eighth inning last night, as the Milwaukee Brewers lost at Arizona 5-3. Martin Prado’s two-run single broke a 3-3 tie, as the National League West-leading Diamondbacks bounced back after being swept for three games by the L-A Dodgers. Henderson took the loss and fell to 3-and-3, as the Crew dropped its second straight. Wade Miley went eight innings for Arizona. He retired all but one of the final 17 batters he faced, as he improved to 6-and-7. Brad Ziegler earned his second save. All of Milwaukee’s runs came on homers – a two-run shot by Jonathan Lucroy and a solo blast by Carlos Gomez which gave the Brewers a 3-nothing lead which they later blew. Adam Eaton hit a two-run triple and Jason Kubel had a run-scoring sacrifice fly to tie the game before Henderson’s meltdown. Ryan Braun missed the game to tend to a family medical situation. He was put on Milwaukee’s bereavement list – and if he plays at all before the All-Star break, it won’t be until Sunday. Outfielder Khris Davis was called up from Triple-“A” Nashville to take Braun’s roster spot. The Brewers will try to even their four-game series when they play Game-Two tonight in Phoenix. Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny will start against Diamondbacks’ southpaw Patrick Corbin.

Brewers’ starter Marco Estrada has suffered another setback, as he tries to recover from a strained left hamstring. He had pain in his back after it locked up two days ago, and he said he was feeling better last night. However, Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke has called off a bullpen session Estrada was supposed to have tomorrow. Estrada said his hamstring feels good, but there’s no word on when he’ll throw again. He’s been out since early June.
