WISCONSIN SPORTS BRIEFS: Kelly, Stricker in top 10 of Deere Classic

SILVIS, Ill. - Wisconsin natives Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker are near the top of the leader board at the John Deere Classic.

Kelly shot a seven-under 64 yesterday and is in a five-way tie for fifth. Striker, a Madison native, is tied for tenth after shooting a five-under 66 on the day. Kelly is two-shots back from tournament leader Patrick Reed, who is ten-under for the tournament.

At the U.S. Senior Open, Rhinelander native Dan Forsman shot a four-over-par 74 in his second round today in Omaha. He was tied for 65th as of early afternoon, at four-over-144. Forsman was seven strokes behind the leaders. Fred Funk, Jay Don Blake, Kenny Perry, and Michael Allen were all at three-under as of early afternoon.

Arizona’s Patrick Corbin had a career high 10 strike-outs and kept Milwaukee’s bats in the cold, in a 2-1 win over the Brewers. Starter and birthday boy Tom Gorzelanny allowed two unearned run and three hits in six innings of work for the Brewers. Jean Segura got the game’s only run for the Brewers on a wild throwing error by Arizona’s Miguel Montero in the first inning.

The brother of long-time Major League outfielder Corey Patterson is about to join the Brewers’ organization. The Independent Atlantic League said today that the Brewers acquired utility infielder-and-outfielder Eric Patterson from the York Revolution. The 30-year-old Eric is expected to assigned to Double-“A” Huntsville if he passes a physical. He has played 226 big league games for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland, Boston, and San Diego. He was batting .275 for York with 13 homers and 38 R-B-I’s, and was the starting shortstop in the Freedom Division in the Atlantic League’s recent All-Star Game. Eric’s brother Corey Patterson played briefly for the Brewers in 2009.

It didn't take long for former Milwaukee Bucks guard Monta Ellis to find a new team. Several team sources with the Dallas Mavericks say Ellis has reached a three-year deal worth at least $25-million. Ellis rejected a contract extension with the Bucks that would have been worth $36-million over three years. The six-foot-three guard averaged 19.2 points and six assist last season.

The Milwaukee Bucks are sending a 14-man squad to Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League. Their first game is tomorrow night against the Denver Nuggets. The Bucks’ roster includes two free agents from Wisconsin who hope to hook up with an NBA team – forward Mike Bruesewitz from Wisconsin, and guard Junior Cadougan from Marquette. The Summer League features first-and-second-year players hoping to make a big impression. Second-year forward John Henson leads the Milwaukee squad. The Bucks will play three scheduled games before going into a seeded 22-team tournament. All teams are guaranteed five contests.

All three major NASCAR circuits are in action this weekend, and Wisconsin drivers plan to run in all the events. Matt Kenseth of Cambridge will try to return to the top five in the Sprint Cup standings in the Camping World RV Sales 301 on Sunday in Loudon, New Hampshire. Kenseth is sixth in NASCAR’s top circuit. Also entered are Paul Menard of Eau Claire, Travis Kvapil of Janesville, and Beloit-born Danica Patrick. Kenseth and Menard also plan to race in the Nationwide Series’ CNBC 200 today at Loudon. The Camping World Truck Series is in Newton, Iowa for the American Ethanol-200 tonight. Johnny Sauter of Necedah is entered in that event.

Two more University of Wisconsin football players have been nominated for post-season awards. Senior linebacker Chris Borland is on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Award. It’s the third Borland is being considered for the award that honors the nation’s top defensive player. Also, senior Ryan Groy is on the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation’s best interior lineman on either side of the ball.
