MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Twins host Cleveland tomorrow night

The Minnesota Twins have one more night off before opening the second half of the season on tomorrow at Target Field. Minnesota will host Cleveland for a three-game weekend set before heading out on a seven-game West Coast road trip to Anaheim and Seattle. The Twins sit in fourth place in the American League Central at 39-53, 12-games behind first place Detroit. Friday's first pitch is 7:10 p.m. 


Tony Sanchez blasted a three-run home run in the top of the second inning to give the International League the lead for good as they defeated the Pacific Coast League 4-3 in Reno at the Triple-A All-Star Game. The Pirates catching prospect earned the "Top Star" for the IL. Chris Colabello of the Twins knocked in the other run for the IL, which has won four of the last five in this series. 


The Timberwolves knocked off the Kings 92-54 in the first round of the Las Vegas Summer League tournament last night. Minnesota rookie Shabazz Muhammad led the Wolves with 17 points and four rebounds. The first-round draft choice of the Wolves three-for-four from three-point range. Demetri McCamey (muh-KAY-mee) chipped in with 15 points. Minnesota now plays the NBA D-League Select unit at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Vegas. 


The WNBA Minnesota Lynx return to the hardcourt tomorrow night with a game at San Antonio. Hutchinson native Lindsay Whalen scored a season-high 25 points in Saturday's road win at Tulsa. The 11-and-3 Lynx have the league's top record. The Silver Stars have won only four games. Tip time tomorrow is 7 p.m. 


The University of Minnesota received good news yesterday regarding the playing status of transfer guard Malik Smith. The senior will be eligible immediately to play for the Golden Gopher this coming season after moving to the Minnesota program from Florida International, where he played for current Gopher coach Richard Pitino. Smith averaged 14-points per game for the Golden Panthers last season. 


The Golden Gopher basketball team has drawn a top notch opening-round opponent at the Maui Invitational in November. Pairings were announced today and Minnesota will take on Syracuse in the first round. Arkansas and California will play on the same side of the Gopher bracket. Dayton and Gonzaga play a first-round game, with Baylor and Chaminade also squaring off. Day one of the tournament is set for November 25th, with games coming the following two days, as well. Here is the first-round schedule for the 2013 Maui Invitational (times are Central): 

Monday, November 25: Minnesota vs. Syracuse, 4:30pm 

Monday, November 25: Arkansas vs. California, 2pm 

Monday, November 25: Baylor vs. Chaminade, 8:30pm 

Monday, November 25: Dayton vs. Gonzaga, 11pm 


The Minnesota Vikings are slated to report to training camp in Mankato one week from today Players are scheduled to check in on Thursday, July 25 and begin workouts the following day. The Mankato portion of training camp is scheduled to run July 25-August 14 with most of the practice days set up as two-a-day workouts. One of those practices each day is a walk-through. The team will host an evening practice/scrimmage on Saturday, August 3rd at Blakeslee Stadium. The Vikings open the exhibition schedule with a home game against Houston on August 9th. The regular season begins with a road game in Detroit on September 8th. 


Minnesotan Tom Lehman is taking part in this week's British Open at historic Muirfield in Scotland. This will be the Austin-born and Alexandria-raised Lehman's 20th British Open appearance. He has made the cut in five of the past six British Open tourneys, missing the weekend last year. Lehman's lone major championship is a British Open championship in 1996. Lehman will tee off at 7:17 a.m. (Minnesota time) this morning for the first round. Ernie Els is the defending champion.
