MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Twins' bats go silent as Angels avoid sweep

Jered Weaver threw eight shutout innings and Albert Pujols  drove in the game's lone run, as the Angels avoided a three-game sweep against the Twins with a 1-0 win at Angel Stadium. Weaver yielded only two hits while striking out nine to even his record at 5-and-5. Ernesto Frieri  stranded runners on the corners to preserve the lead and earn his 25th save. The Halos halted a three-game slide. Mike Pelfrey was saddled with the loss despite scattering five hits and only one run in six strong innings. Minnesota is 4-and-2 since the All-Star break.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer is celebrating the birth of twin baby girls. Team officials announced that Mauer is on the Paternity List after he flew back to Minnesota Tuesday night to be with his wife who went into labor. The Twins catcher and wife Maddie had twin girls, named Emily and Maren, early Wednesday morning. Maddie Mauer's due date was not until the end of August, so the babies were about six weeks early. To replace Mauer, the Twins have recalled catcher Drew Butera from Triple-A Rochester.
