MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Royals back above .500 thanks to 7-2 drubbing of Minnesota

 Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas left the yard twice and knocked in four runs to lift the Royals past the Twins 7-2 in the opener of a three-game set at Target Field. Ervin Santana grabbed his seventh win of the season, holding the Twins to two runs over seven innings and striking out eight. Kansas City moved to 52-and-51 on the year, sitting above .500 for the first time since May 18th. The Royals have won seven in-a-row. Joe Mauer and Ryan Doumit each had an RBI for Minnesota. Mike Pelfrey fell to 4-and-9, giving up four runs and eight hits in four innings. The Twins have lost four-of-six. 


The logo for the 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is out. The host Minnesota Twins held a ceremony Tuesday to unveil the logo, which features a partial silhouette of Target Field over the downtown Minneapolis skyline. The logo is contained within the keystone shape inspired by the Twins' "Minnie and Paul" logo that represents the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Minnesota will host the Midsummer Classic on July 15th of next year, its first All-Star Game since 1985 at the Metrodome. 


The Vikings practiced in full pads for the second consecutive day with an afternoon workout at training camp yesterday in Mankato. The team will return to practicing without pads today. Minnesota defensive coordinator Alan Williams says he is pleased with the way his defense has started the training camp, saying the chemistry has been outstanding. The team's linebackers are scheduled to be in the autograph line at "Vikings Village" after this morning's workout. 


The Seahawks' prized offseason acquisition has received bad news. Former Viking receiver Percy Harvin made it known through his Twitter account that he will have to undergo hip surgery. is reporting it will put Harvin out approximately three to four months. Seattle traded its 2013 first round and seventh round picks along with a third rounder in 2014 to Minnesota to acquire the dynamic playmaker. 


Fall camp for the University of Minnesota football team begins this week on campus. The Golden Gophers will practice for the first time on Friday afternoon at the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex. Friday's workout is free and open to the public and begins at 5:15 p.m. Gopher head coach Jerry Kill told reporters yesterday that he is eager to get the camp started. He says the players have been working out hard during the offseason. Minnesota opens the regular season at home against Nevada-Las Vegas on August 29th at TCF Bank Stadium. 


The University of Minnesota men's basketball program released its non-conference schedule yesterday. The highlight games will come at the Maui Invitational when Minnesota takes on Syracuse to open the tourney on November 25th. The Gophers also have potential matchups in Maui with California, Butler, Baylor, Gonzaga, and Dayton. Minnesota will host Florida State on December 3rd as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The lone true road game on the non-conference slate is a visit to Richmond on November 16th. The Big Ten schedule will be released next month. The WNBA Minnesota Lynx return to the hardwood for a game on Friday night against San Antonio. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Tickets are still available for the contest. The Lynx have the league's best record at the All-Star Break.
