WISCONSIN SPORTS BRIEFS: Packers blanked by Cardinals in preseason opener

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers were shut-out in its first preseason game at Lambeau Field last night, losing to the Arizona Cardinal 17-0.

Just three days after signing with Green Bay, quarterback Vince Young was 1-of-3 for 7 yards and rushed for 12 yards on 2 carries. The only real highlight of the game for the Packers was an Aaron Rodgers pass to wide receiver James Jones for 50-yards in the quarterback’s only series of the game. Packers are back in preseason action on August 17, on the road against St. Louis.

Milwaukee put on a scoring display at Safeco Field yesterday, defeating the Seattle Mariners 10-5. First baseman Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam in a big fifth inning for the Brewers. Pitcher Kyle Lohse picked up his eighth win of the season behind seven innings of work; allowing six hits, three runs and seven strikeouts. Some bad news, though – Second baseman Rickie Weeks is done for the season, after an MRI reveals a torn left hamstring. Weeks was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, after suffering the injury on Wednesday night.

Former Milwaukee Braves and four-time All-Star shortstop Johnny Logan has died at the age of 86. Logan played 13 seasons in the league and was a member of the 1957 World Series team. After his retirement, Logan became a scout for the Brewers. Team officials say he died at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee yesterday. In a statement, the Brewers say they will “miss Johnny deeply and will never forget his colorful character and personality.”
