WISCONSIN SPORTS BRIEFS: Stricker in top five of PGA Championship

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - In the final round of the PGA Championship today, Wisconsin native Steve Stricker is in position to make a move for the top spot on the leaderboard.

In a two-way tie for fifth (five-under for the tournament), Stricker trails leader Jim Furyk by four strokes. Stricker’s tee time is scheduled for 2:35 this afternoon.

On the night Ken Griffey Jr. was inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame, the Milwaukee Brewers crashed the party by blanking the Mariners 10-0. Scooter Gennett capped a six run inning on a three-run homer to right field, scoring Juan Francisco and Yuniesky Betancourt. Brewers added four more runs in the ninth inning to finish the blow-out. Tom Gorzelanny picked up his third win of the season, allowing just three hits and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

University of Wisconsin-Madison senior Mohammed Ahmed placed a top ten finish in the 10-thousand meters at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow yesterday. The Canadian athlete took ninth in the event, running a time of 27 minutes, 35.76 seconds. Great Britain’s Mo Farah, the 2012 Olympic champion, snapped Ethiopia’s five-championship winning streak in the event - running just over 27 minutes, 21 seconds. Ahmed says he is returning to Wisconsin for his final season of indoor and outdoor track in 2014.
