WISCONSIN SPORTS BRIEFS: Madison wins Northwoods League title

MADISON - After a 41-29 regular season record, the Madison Mallards won the Northwoods League title last night.

The Mallards beat Duluth 12-3, winning the 2-0 series and locking down the team’s second title since 2004. Madison's Joe McCarthy was named Summer Collegiate World Series MVP; going five-four-six, scoring four runs and four RBIs in last night’s win.

Several players are vying for final roster spots, when the Green Bay Packers play the Rams tonight in St. Louis. Team officials say wide receiver and kick return specialist Jeremy Ross will be “under the microscope” in tomorrow’s preseason game. The battle for starting right tackle is also taking center stage, with Don Barclay and Marshall Newhouse battling for the job. Rookie running back Eddie Lacy is also expected to return tonight, he’s been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Kickoff between the Packers and the Rams is scheduled for 7 p,m. tonight

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez says reports that he was involved with the early leaks of 13 MLB players, including Milwaukee Brewers Ryan Braun, are not true. CBS “60 Minutes” was the first to report a possible player’s union violation, that Rodriguez’s camp released the unpublished names of players in an alleged “Bioscience” performance-enhancing drug scandal in February. Rodriguez says the story is the latest attempt to tarnish his image on the heels of an appeal to his 211-game suspension. Meanwhile, the Brewers have been forced to manage without Braun, who is serving a season-ending ban for his part in the scandal – Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 last night on a walk-off homer by Jonathan Lucroy.

The Milwaukee Bucks and point guard Larry Sanders continue to negotiate a deal to keep him in Wisconsin. A team official says they are “close” to working out a contract extension for the center, reportedly a four year, 44-million dollar deal. The 24-year-old was impressive for the Bucks last season, finishing second in blocked shots and averaging nine-point-eight points per game.
