MINNESOTA SPORTS BRIEFS: Dayton wants Vikings audit results made public

ST. PAUL - Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton says results of a planned audit of the Minnesota Vikings owners' finances should be made public.

The audit was prompted by a New Jersey judge's finding that Zygi Wilf and his family violated racketeering laws in a matter unrelated to their team ownership. Dayton says on the Vikings stadium deal he wants an "absolute airtight guarantee that they have financial wherewithal to meet their obligations." Dayton adds he wants to make sure that what the Vikings said the team would pay is based on accurate information.

The Vikings continue to gear up for their preseason showdown with the 49ers on Sunday night in San Francisco. Minnesota is 0-2 so far in exhibition play following losses to Houston and at Buffalo last week. San Francisco is 1-1 in preseason action. The Vikes practiced yesterday and will be on the practice field at Winter Park again today. Head coach Leslie Frazier says since this is a Sunday game this week, they are treating the preparation period just as they would in the regular season. Frazier says that will give the young players an idea of how things work when the real season gets here and also help the veterans in getting back into their routine. Sunday's game kicks off at 7 p.m.

The 49ers could be looking for additional help at the quarterback position. CSN-Bay Area reported San Francisco is interested in veteran Seneca Wallace Wallace was recently cut by the Saints. Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien and B.J. Daniels are battling it out for the backup spot behind starter Colin Kaepernick for San Francisco.

The Detroit Tigers offense came alive late, posting four runs in the seventh inning and three in the eighth, as they defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-1 in the second of three at Comerica Park. Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run double and former Twin Torii Hunter was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Reliever Drew Smyly improved to 5-0 in notching the victory. Detroit has won three-of-four. Minnesota's only run came on a Brian Dozier single. Kevin Correia allowed two earned runs and four total in six-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 8-10. The Twins are 55-70 on the year.

The Twins wrap up their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers today in the motor city. Rookie Andrew Albers gets his fourth career start for Minnesota. He is 2-and-1 with a 1.85 ERA in three starts so far. The Tigers will counter with ace Justin Verlander, who is 12-and-9 with a 3.51 ERA. First pitch is slated for 12:08 p.m.

The Minnesota Lynx are back on the court tonight with a road game Connecticut. Both teams have been struggling of late. Minnesota has lost four of its last five games, but still remains 18-7 overall, which is the league's best overall record. Connecticut has dropped back-to-back road games against Atlanta and Chicago and has lost five of their last six games overall and is a league-worst 7-17. This evening's game tips off at 6 p.m.

The University of Minnesota football team opens the season one week from tonight at TCF Bank Stadium with a home game against UNLV. The Gophers worked out yesterday and will have another practice today on campus. Head coach Jerry Kill will give his players the day off tomorrow from practice, although he says they will be watching some gamefilm in preparation for next week's game. The Golden Gophers finished last season with a 6-7 overall record and a trip to a bowl game in Houston, Texas. Next Thursday's game is not yet a sellout.
