WISCONSIN SPORTS BRIEFS: Kenseth wins Sprint Cup race at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Wisconsin-native Matt Kenseth takes the checkered flag at last night’s Sprint Cup race.

The win is his third at Bristol and the 29th of his career – more importantly, the win also locks him in for a Chase berth. Kenseth held off rival Kasey Kahne to close out a wild race full of crashes and drama in pit row.

The Green Bay Packers have released quarterback Graham Harrell yesterday. The move paves a path for Vince Young to become Aaron Rodger’s backup this season. Young was impressive in the loss to Seattle on Friday – leading an 11-play, 80-yard drive and throwing a touchdown pass. The 30-year-old quarterback will likely see a majority of the action in Friday’s preseason finale game against Kansas City. Head coach Mike McCarthy says Young is taking full advantage of the opportunity.

With less than a week to go, the University of Wisconsin football team will kick off the season opener against Massachusetts at Camp Randal Stadium. New head coach Gary Andersen, along with a new coaching staff and playbook, is looking for a fourth-straight Big Ten title. Eight starters from last year’s squad return to the offense, including seniors Jared Abbrederis and running back James White. Andersen says quarterback Joel Stave will start on Saturday, beating out Curt Phillips for the job.

Four home runs by Cincinnati Reds players proved too costly for the Milwaukee Brewers, falling by a final of 6-3. Milwaukee held onto a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning when Cincinnati’s Ryan Ludwick hit a solo home, followed by a two-run homer by Zack Cozart. Brewers’ left fielder Caleb Gindl hit a solo home run in the 8th inning, but it wasn’t enough. Relief pitcher John Axford was credited for the loss, allowing three earned runs and three hits in one inning.
