MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Vikings now 0-3 in preseason as 49ers win easily

Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder threw for 116 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Vikings fell to the 49ers 34-14 last night in San Francisco. Ponder added 20 yards on the ground, but also lost a fumble while being sacked. Star running back Adrian Peterson was on the field for the first two offensive plays of the game for Minnesota, then took the rest of the night off. Peterson did not carry the football. Toby Gerhart had 20 yards rushing in defeat. Niners QB Colin Kaepernick passed for 72 yards and a touchdown. San Fran also got a 105-yard kick return from Lavelle Hawkins for a touchdown. The Vikings close out preseason play Thursday against the Titans and open the regular season at Detroit on September 8th.

Vikings veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of last night's 34-14 preseason loss at San Francisco. While Williams was pursuing 49er's running back LaMichael James he was blocked at the knees by 49er's offensive lineman Joe Looney. Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier says Williams will have the knee further examined today and the team should know more by this afternoon. Frazier said immediately after last night's ballgame that he had not seen a replay of the low block that injured Williams, but did say the assistant coaches in the booth saw a replay and were upset with the low hit by Looney.

Cleveland outfielder Drew Stubbs lifted a solo homer and walked three times as the Indians dropped the Twins 3-1 at Progressive Field in Ohio yesterday. Nick Swisher went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Cleveland, which won the final two games of this three-game series. Scott Kazmir allowed a run in six innings while striking out eight, but Joe Smith picked up the win. Chris Perez earned his 21st save. Doug Bernier drove in the only run for Minnesota, which has lost three-of-five. Jared Burton suffered the loss. The Twins are off today.

The Twins return home to open a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals tomorrow at Target Field. Kevin Correia gets the ball for Minnesota. He is 8-and-10 with a 4.52 ERA in 25 starts this season. KC will counter with James Shields, who is 8-and-8 with a 3.22 ERA. The Royals are back in action tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays at Kauffman Stadium in a makeup game of a May 2nd rainout. Jeremy Guthrie takes a 12-and-10 record into his start for Kansas City. The Royals are 65-and-64 on the season.

The Minnesota Lynx are headed to New York to battle the Liberty tomorrow at the Prudential Center in Newark. The Lynx have won two in-a-row following Saturday's 84-77 home victory over Indiana. Minnesota continues to hold the best record in the WNBA at 20-and-7. New York is 10-and-16.
